Ginkgo biloba vs bacopa comes down to how each one has been studied: bacopa has the more consistent research for attention and memory tasks in healthy adults after about twelve weeks of daily use, while ginkgo is best known for its flavonoids and its traditional link to circulation, with mixed results for memory. Neither works like a cup of coffee. Below we compare the two herbs side by side, then show how they appear in two of our formulas: Cognitive +™, a broad focus blend that includes bacopa, and Ginkgo+, which pairs ginkgo leaf with red Asian ginseng.
Key takeaways
- Bacopa and ginkgo are both slow, steady herbs that research measures in weeks, not minutes.
- Bacopa: studied for attention and memory, usually over twelve weeks or more.
- Ginkgo: studied for its flavonoids and blood flow, with mixed memory results.
- Cognitive + includes bacopa within a multi-ingredient formula; Ginkgo+ is built around ginkgo leaf and red Asian ginseng.
Ginkgo biloba vs bacopa at a glance
Bacopa and ginkgo are both slow, steady herbs that research measures in weeks, not minutes. They come from very different plants and have been studied for different things:
| Bacopa (Bacopa monnieri) | Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A creeping wetland herb used in Ayurvedic tradition | The leaf of one of the oldest living tree species |
| Compounds people talk about | Bacosides | Flavonoids (flavone glycosides) and terpene lactones |
| Main research focus | Attention, reaction time and memory tasks in healthy adults | Circulation and memory, with mixed results |
| Time frame in studies | Usually 12 weeks or more | Single-day tests up to multi-year trials |
| Good to know | Some people notice stomach upset; take it with your routine | May raise bleeding risk; check with your provider if you take blood thinners |
What does bacopa do for focus?
Bacopa research centers on attention and memory tasks after about twelve weeks of daily use. A 2014 meta-analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled trials pooled studies that gave standardized bacopa extract for at least twelve weeks and found improvements on tests of attention speed, such as how quickly people completed a timed connect-the-dots task and how fast they reacted to choices. The authors called the results promising and asked for larger trials.
Two practical points follow from that research. First, bacopa is a long game: short trials have shown little. Second, the studies used specific standardized extracts at specific amounts, so a result from one extract does not transfer automatically to another product.
What does ginkgo biloba do for the brain?
Ginkgo research centers on its flavonoids and circulation, and its memory results are mixed. Ginkgo leaf contains flavonoids, which are antioxidants, and terpenoids, which have been studied for their role in healthy blood flow. Smaller studies have reported benefits on certain memory tasks. However, NCCIH notes that a large, long NIH-funded study in older adults, the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory study, did not find that ginkgo improved long-term memory outcomes. Research on ginkgo combined with Panax ginseng has reported improvements on a memory index in healthy adult volunteers over 14 weeks, which is one reason the two are often paired.

Cognitive + or Ginkgo+: which fits your routine?
Cognitive + is a multi-ingredient focus formula that includes bacopa, and Ginkgo+ pairs ginkgo leaf with red Asian ginseng. They are built differently, so the better fit depends on what you want from a formula.

Cognitive +: a broad focus blend
Cognitive + is built on a 609 mg proprietary blend that includes bacopa, phosphatidylserine, DMAE, GABA, DHA and huperzine A, alongside twenty-two vitamins and minerals in a two-capsule serving. Blend totals are on the label; the amounts inside each blend are not. It is made to support focus, concentration and mental clarity.* The suggested use is two capsules once a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal with a glass of water, so a 60-capsule bottle lasts 30 days.
Know before you choose: Cognitive + contains soy and fish (the DHA comes from tuna), so it is not suitable for a plant-based diet. Its green tea extract is a natural source of caffeine, and it contains iron: accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six, so keep it out of reach of children.
Ginkgo+: ginkgo leaf with red Asian ginseng
Ginkgo+ takes the opposite approach: three botanical actives, each with its amount printed on the label. A two-capsule serving gives you red Asian ginseng extract standardized to 7% ginsenosides (700 mg), ginkgo leaf powder (600 mg) and ginkgo leaf extract standardized to 24% flavones (120 mg). It supports brain health and mental performance and supports immune system function.* It is caffeine-free, and the suggested use is two capsules once a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal.
A simple way to decide
- Choose Cognitive + if you like an all-in-one focus formula with vitamins and minerals included, and you are comfortable with a little natural caffeine and with soy and fish.
- Choose Ginkgo+ if you prefer a short, caffeine-free botanical label where every active has a printed amount.
- Talk to your provider first if you take blood thinners or other medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a medical condition. This matters for ginkgo in particular.
Whichever you choose, every batch is third-party tested for purity and potency and made in an NSF-certified, GMP-certified, FDA-registered U.S. facility. See our standards for how testing works.
Frequently asked questions about ginkgo biloba vs bacopa
Is bacopa or ginkgo better for focus?
Bacopa has the more consistent research on attention tasks in healthy adults, mostly after twelve weeks or more of daily use. Ginkgo's research is broader but more mixed. The better choice depends on your goals, your other supplements and any medication you take.
Can you take ginkgo and bacopa together?
They are sometimes combined in formulas, but there is little research on the pair together. If you are considering both, ask your healthcare provider, especially if you take medication that affects bleeding.
Does Cognitive + contain ginkgo?
No. The current Cognitive + label lists bacopa, phosphatidylserine, DMAE, GABA, DHA and huperzine A among its blend ingredients, but not ginkgo. Ginkgo is the main botanical in Ginkgo+.
How long does bacopa take to work?
The trials that found effects ran for about twelve weeks. Give any bacopa-containing routine at least that long before judging it, and keep everything else in your routine steady so you can tell what changed.
Does ginkgo have side effects?
Ginkgo leaf extract appears to be safe for most people in moderate amounts, according to NCCIH, but it may increase bleeding risk and can interact with some medications, including blood thinners. Mild stomach upset and headache have also been reported.
